The Chinese automobile industry started after World War II when the Communist government gained control of the mainland.  China's first domestically-produced car was the Hong Qi CA770, a limousine used primarily by high-ranking party officials, starting in 1958 and continuing to 1983, becoming an icon of Chinese Comminist history.  Hong Qi is Chinese for Red Flag, a reference to the red Communist flag that became China's national flag.

With over a billion people, China accounts for roughly one-sixth of the world's population, and recently China passed the United States as the world's largest automobile market for number of vehicles sold, making it an increasingly important market for volume automakers around the world.  The Chinese automobile industry has also grown since that single model in 1958 to a major industry producing its own vehicles and branching out overseas by purchasing stakes in established American and British manufacturers.  China also now has an event in the Formula 1 World Championship.

In rapidly building one of the world's largest highway systems and acquiring enough automobiles to fill them, there have been some problems.  Vehicles often lack the safety functions of their American and European counterparts, and operating the vehicles has been the task of a group of first-generation drivers with no history or background of growing up watching their parents on the road, leading to traffic and safety problems that China will have to continue to work on overcoming.

This Special Collection documents the history of China and its contributions to the automobile.

For the purposes of organizing this section, and in consideration of the common history of the people, Taiwan and pre-reunification Hong Kong are included in this section.
