Legendary NASCAR Winston Cup driver and record-tying seven-time Winston Cup Champion.

His accomplishments include:

  • 1979 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year
  • 1980 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1986 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1987 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1990 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1991 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1994 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
  • 1995 Brickyard 400 Winner
  • 1998 Daytona 500 Winner

    In his career he won 76 Winston Cup races in 667 starts.  That's winning 11.39% of the races he started.

    Dale Earnhardt died in the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.  DEI drivers Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were running first and second, respectively.  Dale Earnhardt was running third when there was contact between his car and the #40 car of Sterling Marlin.  Dale Earnhardt's car slid down the track, then up towards the wall.  On the way up the track Earnhardt's car hit Ken Schrader's #36 car and both cars hit the outside wall.

    Michael Waltrip would eventually win the race, his first start for Dale Earnhardt, Inc.  Dale Earnhardt's car was cut open to retrieve him from his car and he was taken to Halifax Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:16 PM.

    The number 3 has not been raced in a Winston Cup or Nextel Cup race since.

    His life and career have been the subject of two movies.  ESPN's biopic 3 starring Barry Pepper as Earnhardt and the 2007 documentary Dale narrated by Paul Newman.
