William Clyde Elliott is a former NASCAR Winston Cup Champion and currently a part-time Nextel Cup driver.
He was born in Forsyth Hospital in Cumming, Georgia, the third of 3 boys. In his senior year of high school he began working at his father's car dealership, Dahlonega Ford Sales.
In 1985 Bill Elliott won the Winston Million, and became the first NASCAR driver on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the headline, "Hot Bill Elliott Wins A Cool Million."
"Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" was voted NASCAR's Most Popular Driver more times than any other driver. He was the first driver to win the Winston Million and holds the NASCAR record for fastest qualifying time at 212.809 mph.
Elliott went into partial retirement by racing only part-time after the 2003 season.  In 2006 his autobiography, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville: My Life in NASCAR was published with co-author Chris Millard.
