Smoking in company cars has been banned for a long time as it is classed as smoking in a place of employment, but if recent statistics are anything to go by then smoking in the car at all could seriously damage your health. The British medical association have revealed that it is more dangerous that breathing in harsh exhaust fumes, and they are calling for there to be harsher laws on the use of both alcohol and cigarettes. The union took a vote and have voted in favour of banning smoking in cars, as well as shorter licensing hours for alcohol, and the introduction of a minimum price to regulate the industry. They are hoping that they will persuade the government in the United Kingdom to look out for the health of its constituents, and protect people's health. Supporters feel that it will lighten the strain on the NHS meaning that less people will be admitted to hospitals with long term diseases like lung cancer and tumours caused by smoking.

It is thought that the concentration of smoke particles in a car can be up to twenty seven times stronger than in a home, not to mention in the outdoors. If you have to smoke then doing it outside will lessen the chances of you becoming ill, and will help out passengers who are exposed to secondary smoke. It would also protect pregnant women and children from the harming fumes. The British lung foundation are supporting this call, and feel that with doctors being among the people voting for this to be implemented, that the government can't avoid implementing the change.

Critics feel that it will be intruding on peoples civil liberty and add further to the thought that the country is gearing towards a heavy big brother state.

Smoking in cars is also dangerous from a distraction point of view. If you have something in your hand then you are less able to be in control of the car, and if a cigarette is dropped it could cause a fire within the car.
