Experienced bikers know that motorcycle apparel is more than just a fashion statement. It is as important a purchase as motorcycle parts for the bike itself. In an accident, your clothing is the only thing between your skin and the pavement over which you will be moving at high speed. In many cases protective clothing is literally the difference between life and death.

Many authorities recommend buying your first outfit before you start to ride. That way you will have it for protection during the learning process. In any event, one set of appropriate clothing should be a very early purchase. While browsing local stores looking at the fascinating motorcycle accessories, make a few initial apparel selections.

What to Buy:

* A helmet should be the first purchase any beginning motorcyclist makes. Even if the law where the novice biker lives allows riding without one, it is a bad idea for a neophyte. New bikers do fall, and heads should be protected until they are able to ride competently and make an informed decision about helmet use. A visor will come with the helmet, but it can be replaced if desired.

* A balaclava is important to keep the wind out of a rider's face. They not only preserve comfort but also provide a great opportunity to make a fashion statement. Balaclavas come in a wide variety of patterns and colors.

* Motorcycle boots are low heeled to help control the bike. They are usually made of heavy leather for protection against pavement. Riding boots should fit as well as any other footwear.

* Gloves should be especially well protected. A falling person tends to reach out with the hands, and a good set of mitts or gloves can prevent crippling damage. Of course the gloves should also be flexible enough to permit safe operation of the bike.

* Body wear can be a one piece suit or separate jacket and trousers. It should be of sufficiently thick material to protect a biker being dragged over a rough surface, and it should contain enough protective reinforcements and armor to do the job. Motorcycle clothing should fit very close to the body; in an accident, it should be tight enough to stay in place.

The gear a motorcyclist chooses to wear says a great deal about the biker. Clothing that is all image and no protection hints that the one wearing it does more talking about biking than actual riding. Rugged, functional gear with plenty of protection tells the world it is worn by a biker with serious skills as well as good sense.
