Russia Investigates Alleged Bribes by Mercedes

VOA Breaking News (Voice of America)

Russian officials say they are investigating allegations that the Mercedes company paid bribes in connection with the sale of cars to the government.

Mercedes paid more than $185 million in fines earlier this year to settle civil and criminal charges in the United States that the firm had paid bribes to officials in various countries to win deals to sell cars, including Russia.

Russian President Dimitry Medvedev ordered the new investigation. He has pledged to root out widespread corruption in Russia.

Mercedes officials say they will cooperate with the investigation.
