Bus Crash Kills 40 in Northern Philippines

VOA News
August 18, 2010 at 9:10 am

Forty people are dead after a passenger bus plunged off a mountain road in the northern Philippines on Wednesday.

Police say most of the victims were crushed to death when the vehicle crashed. Some were thrown out and tumbled down a steep ravine. About 10 survivors were taken to a hospital.

The bus had traveled about 10 kilometers from the mountain resort of Baguio at the time of the crash.

Police say a mechanical fault may have caused the accident, one of the worst in recent years.

Accidents in the area are common because of poorly maintained vehicles.

Last month, 15 people died when their bus slammed into a concrete barrier in the central Philippines.

Some information in this story was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
