Multi-Vehicle Accident Kills 20 in Nigeria

VOA News
August 15, 2010 at 8:10 pm

Nigerian police say at least 20 people were killed when an out-of-control truck on its way to Lagos crashed into dozens of vehicles and burst into flames.

Dozens of people were injured in the accident Sunday on one of Nigeria’s busiest roads.

The brakes of the truck failed as it was coming down a slope, causing it to crash into dozens of vehicles waiting at a police checkpoint on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Fatal traffic crashes are common in Nigeria, where decades-old roads are pitted with potholes and drivers frequently fail to observe traffic laws.

Some information in this story was provided by Reuters.
