Gas Tax Popular When— Publication: Automotive Daily News Date: 27 August 1925 Subject: American Government , Petroleum

Taxing gasoline is rapidly becoming a popular form of raising money among state legislatures. Citizens of the states imposing this form of tax have not always been so enthusiastic. To determine exactly the status of the motor fuel tax, the Automotive Daily News recently undertook a canvass of states now having a gas tax on the statute books. The result is enlightening.
Wherever the revenue derived from the gas tax is spent on highway building and maintenance, the tax is popular. On the other hand, wherever the revenue is dissipated indiscriminately, without the motoring public seeing the results of its contribution, the tax is decidedly unpopular.
The lesson for lawmakers is plain. Motorists resent the imposition of class taxation, unless the revenue so derived is applied to the development of their interests.
