NHTSA Announces Safety Recall Of Century Convertible Child Seats

July 6, 2001

NHTSA 35-01
Contact: Tim Hurd
Tel. No.: (202) 366-9550

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced a safety recall of Century convertible child seats equipped with the "A-Lok Adjuster," which tightens the child seat harness straps on the child.

The recall involves 6,509 Century Encore (44612 GTn and 4662 WSC 01); Bravo (44622 LTG, 44630 LTH, 44631 PFN, and 44662 WSC); Accel (45100 CHT, 45100 MTE, 45100 STH, 45200 LFT, 45200 MXM, 45600 JTI, 45600 MTE, 45600 MTO, 45600 MXM, 45600 SAF, 45700 GSD, and 45700 LFT); and Smartmove (44709 MTE and 44709 SVR) child restraint seats manufactured between April 9 and May 10, 2001.

The A-Loks on these seats may allow the webbing to slip in the event of a vehicle crash. Century will notify its customers and provide a replacement seat free of charge. NHTSA advises parents to continue to use the seat while waiting to receive a replacement because it will still provide better protection than an adult seat belt or no restraint.

For more information, owners should call Century toll free (800) 575-6097 or write to Graco Children's Products, Inc., P.O. Box 100, Elverson, Pa. 19520.

Consumers with questions about this or any other safety recall campaign should call NHTSA's toll-free Auto Safety Hotline or Dash-2-DOT (888-327-4236). Consumers in the Washington, D.C., area should call (202) 366-0123.
