NHTSA ANNOUNCES SAFETY RECALL OF EVENFLO CHILD SEATS

Contact: NHTSA, Tim Hurd, (202) 366-9550

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced a safety recall of certain Evenflo Company, Inc. (Evenflo) child restraint seats.

"This recall is unfortunate, but when used without the base these seats still provide excellent protection. Better still, parents should get the free repair kit as soon as possible," said NHTSA Acting Administrator Rosalyn Millman.

The recall involves 164,144 Evenflo On My Way® Position Right™ infant car seats manufactured between Jan. 26, 1999, and Feb. 10, 2000.

Evenflo has discovered that after repeated use by consumers, two alignment posts in the Position Right™ base can become bent. If the posts are bent, consumers may have difficulty installing the carrier onto the base. Bent posts could also interfere with proper latching of the carrier to the base, preventing the child from being properly restrained. The kit prevents the posts in the base from bending.

Evenflo has developed a metal clip which is easily installed over the positioning posts to prevent bending. Owners should call Evenflo at (800) 316-4779 to obtain a free repair kit and installation instructions.

Children riding in motor vehicles should always be in the back seat appropriately restrained for every trip, Millman emphasized.

Consumers with questions about this or any other safety recall campaign should call NHTSA's toll-free Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
