Could we see the 2013 Porsche Cayman at the LA Auto show? Porsche have announced a new compact sportscar in a press release, but fail to give any details

Porsche have this morning issued a press release that contains the following statement:

The world premiere of a compact sports car at the LA Auto Show will give added dynamic impetus to this trend. Porsche is presenting the new vehicle to the international media for the first time at a press conference at 12:05 pm on November 28 at the Porsche show booth in the Petree Hall.

Which is news. Let's examine what we know already about Porsche's 2013 line-up.

The Cayman is due an update. The new compact sports car could be the revised for 2013 Cayman.

The 911 Carrera 4 will make it's US debut at the LA Auto Show. Porsche talk about this elsewhere in the press release.

The Panamera Sport Tourismo has already been shown as a concept, and it certainly isn't a compact sports car.

The Boxster is being updated for 2013, but we saw that at the Geneva Motor Show

The 911 will be fifty in 2013 and Porsche will celebrate it's birthday in some style. The first 911 appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show and Porsche have already said they plan something special to celebrate it's half century. This, though, is likely to happen at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show with a 911 special.

The Porsche Macan will be a compact SUV to rival the Audi Q5, but we already know that is due to be revealed at the 2013 Frankfurt show. Besides, it isn't a compact sportscar.

With the testing miles put on modern cars, prototypes are usually spotted well ahead of release - and the only prototype seen recently is that of the revised Cayman. Therefore the new 'compact sports car' which will be revealed on 28 November is likely to be the second generation Porsche Cayman.

Unless, that is, Porsche have something up their sleeve. They do, after all, have access to the VW MQB chassis which allows for much faster product development...
