Maserati wants to sell 50,000 car a year by 2015. Spearheading that proposed tenfold increase in sales is this, the 2013 Maserati Ghibli.

The Ghibli is aimed at the Mercedes E-class, BMW 5-series and the Jaguar XF. As such expect prices to start at around £50,000.

From launch the Ghibli will get petrol and diesel versions of a 3 litre V6 engine, mated to an 8 speed automatic ZF transmission. The car will be offered with rear wheel drive or Q4 four wheel drive, although Q4 won't be available in the UK or other RHD markets. A petrol V8 will be available at some point after initial launch.

The Ghibli is a pretty car in a way that only the Italians and British seem to be able to manage recently. The integration of the corporate grille has been managed into the lowered, raked bonnet well, the twin lines on it's flanks are well executed without being fussy and the rear end is finished off in a way that few manage to achieve.

The interior looks clear and uncluttered. Maserati have chosen the perfect colours to show it off - red and black contrast each other well in luxurious cars. Also note - just to the left of the steering wheel is a proper switch to control the lights. Maserati seem to have recognised that drivers don't necessarily want every single feature of their car embedded deep in a computer program.

Maserati rushed these photos out after they were leaked online. The official reveal was supposed to be tomorrow, 10 April. Expect more photos and information soon.
