Bus Crash in Zimbabwe Kills 18

Police in Zimbabwe say at least 18 people were killed when a bus swerved off the road and slammed into a tree.

The crash occurred Saturday about 100 kilometers north of the capital, Harare.

Police official Oliver Mandipaka said a rear wheel fell off while the bus was in motion, causing the accident.

He said 16 people died on the spot, while two others died after being taken to a local hospital.

Bus accidents are common in Zimbabwe, in part due to poor maintenance of roads and vehicles, a result of the troubled economy.
