Race Car Driver Jackie Stewart Knighted

November 23, 2001

Three-time Formula One driving champion Jackie Stewart has been knighted by Britain's Prince Charles at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace.

The Prince, who recently hurt his left eye while pruning a tree, joked that the Scotsman was very brave to let him touch his shoulder with a sword at the investiture.

Stewart is a close friend of the Royal family and noted that he was voted sportsman of the year in 1971 when Princess Anne was voted sportswoman of the year for show jumping.  Stewart won the Formula One driving championship in 1969, 1971 and 1973.
