RE: Launching of Vehicle Import and Certification FAQs and Status Report on Pending Import Eligibility Petitions
    Friday, May 6, 2005

The Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (OVSC), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has expanded the Import and Certification Division website to include a new section entitled "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs). The new section will be launched on Friday, May 6, 2005, and can be accessed on NHTSA’s website at www.nhtsa.dot.gov by selecting the pull-down entitled "Vehicle Importation Regulations" from "NHTSA Quick Links". Don’t forget to click on the "go" button after selecting "Vehicle Importation Regulations". The new section addresses questions and concerns involving vehicle importation issues that are presented to the Import and Certification Division on a recurring basis. OVSC is also adding to the agency’s website a monthly status report on import eligibility petitions that are pending with the agency. These petitions are filed with NHTSA to permit the importation of motor vehicles that were not originally manufactured to comply with all applicable Federal safety standards. The status report can be accessed on the "Vehicle Importation Regulations" page of the website.

If you receive an inquiry concerning a matter addressed by the new FAQs, or an inquiry concerning the status of a pending import eligibility petition, you should refer the requesting party to the appropriate pages on the NHTSA website. Alternately, you should advise the party to contact the Import and Certification Division by telephone at 202-366-5291 or by email at importandcertification@nhtsa.dot.gov.

    Thank you.
