NHTSA Recall 12C003000

Agency:  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Seats:  Evenflo Big Kid

NHTSA Recall 12C003000

NHTSA Campaign ID number : 12C003000

Child Restraint Brand Name / Model or Model No.: Production Dates:
EVENFLO / BIG KID Information not Available
Manufacturer: EVENFLO COMPANY, INC. Report Receipt Date: SEP 27, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12C003000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
Potential Number of Units Affected: 151
Summary:
Certain Evenflo Big Kid Factory Select booster seats, Model Nos. 30911173AD, 3091967AD, 30911118AD, and 30911120D, shipped between August 6, 2012, and September 18, 2012, fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213, "Child Restraint Systems." The subject seats were originally manufactured solely for purposes of retail display and not to be sold at retail. Therefore, the seats were packaged without the instruction manual or the required registration card. However, the seats were inadvertently shipped to Evenflo's institutional customers (i.e. hospitals, government agencies) to be given to families. None of the affected units were sold at retail stores.
Consequence:
Without the instruction manual the seat may be used improperly. Should the owner not file a registration with the child seat manufacturer due to lack of information on how to do so, they may not be notified of a safety recall. Either condition puts the child at an increased risk of possible injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy:
The affected seats have a label stating: "DISPLAY ONLY – NOT INTENDED FOR SALE," located on the back of the booster seat headrest. Evenflo will mail owners who have received an affected Big Kid booster seat a remedy kit that includes a consumer registration card, an instruction manual, and an overlabel to cover the current label stating: "DISPLAY ONLY – NOT INTENDED FOR SALE." The remedy kit will be provided free of charge. Notification is expected to begin during October 2012. Owners may contact Evenflo at 1-800-233-5921 or at safety.evenflo.com..
Notes:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
