Model year 1997 was recalled by the NHTSA because it is possible that if the air bag computer in a subject vehicle experiences a mechanical shock within a very short time after the engine is started, e.g., rapidly moving the front seat back against the stops or a sudden release of the parking brake, the air bag can deploy inadvertently (NHTSA recall 97V043.001, Toyota Campaign No. SSC V01).
