The steps in constructing concrete overlays are outlined in this video, which begins with a discussion of design considerations and the use of bonded vs. unbonded overlays. Bonded overlays are demonstrated first. Pre-overlay repairs of faulted joints and shattered slabs are briefly shown. Surface preparation options are discussed: shot blasting or cold-milling, and secondary cleaning by sandblasting or water blasting. Next, concrete placement and curing are shown, with emphasis on the application of bonding material, and joint sawing and sealing are preformed. Unbonded overlays are demonstrated, with a discussion of pre-overlay repairs and the placement of a separation layer of hot mix asphalt concrete. Finally, new shoulders are shown for both types of overlays. SHRP tape no. 27
