FORT ATKINSON, Wis. (September 19, 2011) – In a season with two lengthy intermissions Mid-American Stock Car Series racers have had plenty of time to rest and recharge for the final three-week run of the 19th season. The series jumps back into action this Saturday, Sept. 24 at Madison International Speedway.

No driver was more prepared to return than Lyle Nowak as he competed in his final weekly race at State Park Speedway in Wausau on Thursday, Sept. 8. Nowak, who is a past winner of the MIS fall race, claimed that all the time off had given him plenty of time to tweak and tune on his Sprecher’s Monte Carlo, and that he may have found a few tricks to make it even faster.

Nowak had plenty of time to tweak on his Mid-Am mount as his State Park Speedway ride was taken care of by the capable hands of Ben Martinson. Martinson also is the owner of Brian Back’s MASCS racer. After missing the last two MASCS events at Norway Speedway and Dells Raceway Park, Martinson said he and Back will return to action at Madison and most likely Oktoberfest in La Crosse.

While some drivers have been waiting to return others have been keeping their Mid-American cars busy. Perhaps the two busiest MASCS drivers this summer have been point leader James Swan and leading rookie contender Dan Church. Swan and Church have been the top tandem at Slinger Speedway in the Mid-American style class exchanging fast times and feature wins.

Most recently Ryan Farrell, a former Swan crew member who drives for Church, has joined the duo at the front of the pack. Farrell has made three starts with the series this season and listed his intention of joining for two of the final three events so he may be an eligible rookie in 2012.

As those drivers have been turning laps at other venues to stay fresh, one MASCS competitor was able to get some laps at MIS before the series makes its second stop next week. Scott Null took to the wheel of Wayne Peterson’s Petersonmotorsports.com Ford in the ARCA Series presented by Menards Herr’s Live Life with Flavor 200 on August 26.

Null, who has also kept busy helping NASCAR Truck and Nationwide teams during the intermission, retired after 38 laps of action, but said he took some positives from his ARCA debut. He commented that during an autograph session one of the young, up-and-coming ARCA drivers commented that he must have raced at MIS before, because no one knew how to drive the track like Null.

With some extra experience, Null will be seeking his first ever MASCS win Saturday. This season at MIS may prove to be the year to end jinxes as one was broken when the series made its first stop on July 1. In the Firecracker 40 James Swan recorded his first ever feature win at Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile. Bad luck and demons had plagued him since making regular visits in 2005. Swan claimed that as one of the most memorable wins of his career.

If he is to repeat at MIS Swan will bolster his already hefty 96-point advantage over defending MASCS champion Lyle Nowak. However, a 96-point lead is anything but safe with three events remaining. Also still in the championship conversation are the most recent winner in MASCS action Travis Rodewald who is 106 points back and last year’s Rookie of the Year Tyler Bauknecht who sits 114 points back.

Qualifying for the Capitol Classic at Madison International Speedway begins at 4 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 24. Racing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Mid-American will be joined by the Big 8 Series, ASA Midwest Truck Tour, Central States Regions Super Cups, Legend Cars, Illini Midgets, Internationals/Short Trackers and Area Sportsman on a busy afternoon of racing.

Madison International Speedway is located a half mile off of WI Hwy 138 on Sunrise Rd in Oregon, Wis. For more information visit www.madisoninternationalspeedway.com
