Purchasing your first car can be an exciting adventure. It is something you remember, just like you remember your first love. You do not want to have a bad memory of this experience by purchasing a bad vehicle. Here are a few things to look for when purchasing used cars.

One of the things to look for is the paint job. One way to test if the vehicle had a paint job is by running your finger along the edges, such as where the door closes. If you feel a ridge then there was a tape line. A car with a paint job is not necessarily a bad thing. Check for dents and scratches on the vehicle as well. Minor dents should not be a problem, but be weary of large dents on the car.

One of the things you want to avoid, is purchase a stolen vehicle. The best way to make sure that is not what you are doing is by checking the VIN number on the car. There are certain parts of the vehicle which will have this number on it. Make sure that this is the same number as the vehicle registration paper. If it does not match, then this is something you should look into.

The engine is another thing you want to inspect, when checking out the car. This is the heart of the vehicle, it is what keeps it running. When a human heart starts failing, other organs of the body soon follow as well. This is similar in the car, once the engine starts failing, other parts of the vehicle are soon to follow. Turn on the vehicle to listen to the noises from the engine. A good car should not have loud noises coming from there.

The last thing you want to do is end up with a car with high mileage on it. The mileage of the car is an indication of how long the car has been traveling. It also gives you an idea of the wear and tear of the car. This is why, you want to get a car with low mileage on it.

Look at the interior as well when inspecting a vehicle. Make sure the seats and carpet are not ripped or have to many stains on them. If there are too many stains or cigarette burns, then you might want to stay away or ask for a discount. Minor stains or tear can be easily covered by seat covers, or using a car floor mat.

Ask to take the vehicle you are trying to purchase for a test drive. Listen to any noises when you apply the breaks. A vehicle in good condition should not make loud noises. As you are applying the brakes, pay attention to how the car stops. If it shook before breaking then it is a vehicle with problems.

These are some things to look for when wanting to purchase used cars. Keep in mind that most vehicles will have some form of wear and tear. This is fine as long as the car runs smoothly without any problems. If you do not have knowledge of vehicles, you should hire a mechanic to go along with you.
