Police in India's remote northeast say a bus carrying a wedding party has plunged into a lake, killing at least 28 people, including the groom.

Authorities say the accident occurred late Monday near the village of Hajo in Assam state , when a wooden bridge gave way.

Villagers rescued 10 people, who were taken to the hospital. Authorities say there were about 40 people on board at the time of the accident, mostly from the groom's family.

The World Health Organization says India has the highest annual highway death toll in the world.

The majority of traffic accidents are said to be caused by bad roads and speeding.
