Authorities say a truck crash in the southern Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 40 people.

The mayor of the town of Tshikapa says the vehicle was carrying more than 80 people, as well as merchandise, when it overturned late Monday in Kasai-Oriental province.

Several people also were injured in the crash.

Years of conflict have left Congo’s roads in poor condition, and road accidents involving overloaded vehicles are common.

Some information in this story was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
