German maritime officials say a car ferry has caught fire in the Baltic Sea.

Officials say an explosion erupted on the Lisco Gloria early Saturday morning.

Authorities say more than 200 passengers and crew have been rescued from the burning vessel. They say several people were injured.

Authorities say other ships were nearby at the time of the explosion and came to the rescue of the passengers and crew.

The ferry was traveling from the German port of Kiel to Klaipeda in Lithuania. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
