German Bus Crash Leaves 13 Dead, 32 Hospitalized

Thirty-two people are hospitalized in Germany after the devastating crash of a Polish tourist bus that killed 13 on a highway outside Berlin Sunday.

More than 100 relatives of the victims arrived in Germany on Monday, many not knowing the fate of their loved ones. Some fanned out to the 15 hospitals where the injured were taken.

Authorities on Monday said that 18 of those hospitalized had serious injuries. The accident took place as the bus was headed back to Poland after a holiday tour in Spain.

Survivors of Sunday’s crash told news agencies that a red car had entered the rain-slickened highway near Berlin’s Schoenfeld airport and hit the bus. The passengers said the bus driver swerved to the left where the bus crashed into a bridge abutment.

Police said the car was driven by a 37-year-old woman in a Mercedes. She was seriously injured.
