16 Killed in Indian Bus Accident

VOA News
September 8, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Police in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh say at least 16 people were killed when a bus skidded into a rain-swollen river.

Local officials said the accident happened late Wednesday in Dewas district, some 100 kilometers from the state capital, Bhopal.

They said rescuers recovered 16 bodies from the Bagri river and were continuing to search for survivors.

Police had no details about how many people were in the bus.

India has frequent road accidents due to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance and overcrowding.

Some information in this story was provided by AFP.
