NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT will adjust bus service to better serve customers’ travel needs and to make more efficient use of equipment following the opening of light rail service in Northern Hudson County. The changes will result in a simplified route structure that takes advantage of the light rail’s reliability and convenience.

Starting April 8, three bus routes will be modified to originate and terminate most of their trips at the new Bergenline Avenue light rail station in Union City. The station features a plaza designed for easy transfers between buses and the light rail system, with dedicated departure locations for each bus route. Three express elevators provide access to the platforms for frequent light rail service to North Bergen, Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City and Bayonne.

Under the new route structure, many customers will experience faster trips because the light rail system is not subject to traffic or weather impacts.

In addition, some customers will be able to take advantage of cost savings thanks to NJ TRANSIT’s fare policy, which enables customers to use their bus passes of two zones or more on the light rail system at no additional charge. For example, a customer who today commutes on the 181 bus from Hoboken Terminal to the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal pays $111 for a four-zone monthly pass. With the service changes, the customer will take light rail from Hoboken Terminal to Bergenline Avenue Station, where the 181 bus will originate. Because the Bergenline-GWB trip is only two zones, the customer will purchase a $71 bus pass (saving $40 per month) and will be able to use that pass on the light rail at no additional charge. (The travel time is the same, even allowing nine minutes for the transfer at Bergenline Avenue Station.)

As a result of the modified route structure, some customers will find a new bus route serving their stop, and some customers will now transfer between bus and light rail or between two bus routes for certain trips. Starting April 8, the following bus service adjustments will take effect:

  • 89 North Bergen-Hoboken - Service will be rerouted south of 48th Street in Union City via lower Park Avenue in Union City and Washington Street in Hoboken, with midday and evening service added every hour. For service in lower Union City and Jersey City via Bergenline Avenue, customers may use the 22X (express) or regular 22 route.
  • 181 Hoboken-New York (GWB) - All service will begin and end at Bergenline Avenue Station and will no longer operate south of 48th Street. For service south of 48th Street via Park Avenue and Washington Street, customers may use the expanded 89 route.
  • 86 Nungessers-Newport Mall - Midday and evening weekday service and all weekend service will begin and end at Bergenline Avenue Station, and all service within Union City will operate via Park Avenue only. For service north of Bergenline Avenue Station along Bergenline Avenue, customers may use the 22, 84, 156, 159 or 181 bus routes.
  • 22 Hillside and 22X Hoboken Express - Regular 22 service will begin and end at North Bergen (Nungessers). For service between Columbia/Anderson avenues and 91st Street, customers may use the 159 route. The new 22X (express) route will operate during weekday peak periods via Bergenline Avenue, Paterson Avenue and Observer Highway between Bergenline Avenue Station and Hoboken.


  • Customer advice

    The bus route changes taking effect April 8 will bring more reliable service to thousands of North Jersey customers. As part of an extensive outreach program, NJ TRANSIT will communicate the changes through its website, customer information seat drops, new schedules, and posters on-board buses and at boarding locations. To minimize inconvenience during the transition, NJ TRANSIT advises customers to familiarize themselves with the changes by:

  • Calling 1-800-772-2222 for travel assistance (available in English and Spanish)
  • Visiting the NJ TRANSIT customer service office at Hoboken Terminal
  • Attending customer forums at Hoboken Terminal (in the bus lane area) on Wednesday, March 29 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to pick up a "Bus Service Adjustments" brochure and new timetables from NJ TRANSIT staff
  • Consulting new timetables available on-board buses


  • Assistance is also available at Bergenline Avenue Station from Anthony Gonzalez, NJ TRANSIT’s newly appointed station supervisor. Anthony is available from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
