The FBI Kansas City Division has initiated an investigation into the allegations of excessive use of force by a member of the Independence, Missouri Police Department in reference to an altercation that occurred Sunday, September 14, 2014.

The FBI has primary investigative jurisdiction over allegations of civil rights violations. An allegation of excessive use of force by a sworn law enforcement officer would fall under the FBI Civil Rights Program and be investigated as a color of law violation.
