Corporal Shields Declares Children and Grownups Must Be Careful.

Gives Talk Before Pupils of Fountain School Tuesday Afternoon.

FOUNTAIN, Mich., May 24.—Corporal Roy Shields of the state police traffic force visited Fountain Tuesday afternoon.

While here he gave a talk at the school.

Must Be Careful.

"We are trying," he said, "to teach grownups and children to be careful, to watch traffic signs, and to take care of their cars and to be what the officers call a careful driver.

"We want the children as well as older folk to know that the square sign just warns them to be careful. The diamond shaped sign warns of the end of a road or a detour, a bad hill road, and a sharp curve. The octagonal or eight-sided sign is the national official stop sign and one that must be observed."

Must Educate Children.

Continuing, Mr. Shields said: "It is only by educating the children that we can make the roads safe. With the number of cars increasing by the hundred each year, traffic must move faster, but must do so in a safe manner.

"An increased number of traffic officers will be on the roads this year who will do their best to make Michigan roads safe."

Corporal Shields is with the safety and educational department of the state police. An attempt will be made in Fountain to organize a junior police force to assist in a safety first campaign.
