Federal Highway Administrator Kenneth R. Wykle today announced the selection of the 1999 Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship recipients.

"President Clinton said that education must provide the knowledge and nurture the creativity that will allow America to thrive," U.S. Transportation Secretary Slater said. "These fellowships underscore President Clinton’s commitment to education and will help ensure that America will have the skilled workforce necessary for continued economic growth and advancement of transportation in the 21st century."

The Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program was established in 1992 under the provisions of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 and was re-authorized in 1998 by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. It annually seeks to attract the best and brightest minds to the field of transportation research and the transportation workforce and encompasses all modes of transportation. Selection criteria for student awards include applicants’ academic achievements, recommendations and likelihood for pursuit of a career in transportation.

"The Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship program attracts the best and brightest minds to the transportation industry," Wykle said. "Through this program, we will expose students to the wealth of opportunities in the exciting arena of transportation engineering and research, and help ensure that these students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for the 21st century."

Eisenhower Fellowship Awards fall into six categories: Graduate (GRAD), Grants for Research (GRF), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), Tribal Colleges (TC) and Faculty (FF). Since its inception, the program has been funded at $2 million per year and has supported more than 750 students and faculty. In addition to the 1999 recipients, the program continues to support 15 masters and doctoral level graduate fellowship recipients selected last year.
