LAKEVILLE, Minnesota (September 12, 2008) - - There is some light at the end of the tunnel. USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup Series rookie Matt Merrell finished 13th in the most recent USAR event at Mansfield Motorsports Park and while the finish wasn’t the team’s first top-10 finish, the run gives the team some much needed confidence exiting the first championship race of the year.

“We had a good run at Mansfield ,” said Merrell, who will spend his downtime between the next USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup event competing in the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Salem Speedway. “I’m really proud of my bunch at Win-Tron Racing. They never give up and that is the attitude we need in these championship races.”

Merrell added, “Our season has been solid. We’ve had some great runs which have been spoiled by some bad luck but after our performance at Mansfield , I think our future is looking bright.”

Picking up 11 positions in the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup standings entering the next event at Iowa Speedway on September 20th, Merrell is feeling relieved.

“Staying in the game is huge for me,” added Merrell, the Portland , Texas native. “I’m going to have the opportunity to return to the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Salem Speedway before climbing back into the Hooter’s Pro Cup car at Iowa Speedway. Keeping focused is important to me and racing is what I love to do, so it’s a win-win situation.”

He continued, “ Salem is one of my favorite tracks and Iowa Speedway is an incredible short track. Luckily for me, my team has experience at both facilities which is a bonus for me.”

Reflecting on the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup Series in general, Merrell admits publicly how competitive the year has been. “I tell you what the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup Series has been extremely strong and competitive. There is no room for error literally. This is a good learning series. I’ve learned a lot not only about myself but about our race team as well. Sure, we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs but as an organization we’ve been able to strengthen largely in-part to the competition and experience in this series. The next three races could be very big for us.”

“We haven’t finalized our plans for the 2009 season but we are looking at coming back for another round. I believe, another year in the Hooter’s Pro Cp Series will help me mature further, the details just have to be worked out.”

Team Manager Nate Thiesse of Win-Tron Racing offered, “The down time between the championship races allows us to catch our breath and prepare for Iowa while also keeping Matt focused by putting him in the ARCA car at Salem . We’re off to a solid championship start after our Mansfield run and hope to keep the momentum rolling at Iowa Speedway. We all agree, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.”

With three races remaining in the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup Series championship series, Merrell is holding the 18th position at 213 markers, gaining 100 markers after Mansfield . Merrell is 30 markers from the top-10 and 167 credits from the top spot held by Benny Gordon.
