The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) crash test results and rollover ratings for selected 2002 and 2003 models are now available on the agency's web site: www.nhtsa.dot.gov.

Rated for rollover resistance are the 2002 Honda Civic two-door hatchback, MINI Cooper two-door coupe, Audi A4 four-door sedan, BMW 3-series four-door sedan, Subaru Impreza four-door wagon, Honda CR-V 4x2 four-door utility, Saturn VUE 4x2 four-door utility, Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 four-door pickup, and the Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 four-door pickup. The 2003 Acura 3.2 TL four-door sedan and the Cadillac CTS four-door sedan are also rated.

Rated for frontal impact are the 2002 Acura RSX two-door coupe, MINI Cooper two-door coupe, BMW 325i four-door sedan, Daewoo Nubira four-door sedan, Ford Focus four-door sedan, Hyundai Sonata four-door sedan, Kia Spectra four-door sedan, Nissan Altima four-door sedan, Saab 9-5 four-door sedan, Subaru Impreza four-door wagon, Subaru Legacy four-door sedan, Toyota Camry four-door sedan, Acura MDX 4x4 four-door utility, Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x4 four-door utility, Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 two-door utility, GMC Envoy 4x4 four-door utility, Honda Passport 4x4 four-door utility, Infiniti QX4 4x4 four-door utility, Isuzu Axiom 4x4 four-door utility, Isuzu Rodeo 4x4 four-door utility, Land Rover Discovery 4x4 four-door utility, Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 four-door utility, Nissan Xterra 4x4 four-door utility, Oldsmobile Bravada  4x4 four-door utility, Toyota Highlander 4x4 four-door utility, Dodge Dakota 4x2 extended cab pickup, Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 four-door pickup, Nissan Frontier 4x2 extended cab pickup, Chrysler PT Cruiser van and the Honda Odyssey van.

The 2003 Acura 3.2 TL four-door sedan, Cadillac CTS four-door sedan, Pontiac Vibe four-door wagon, Toyota Corolla four-door sedan, Toyota Matrix four-door wagon and the Honda Pilot 4x4 four-door utility are also rated.

For the Toyota Highlander and the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the agency noted fuel leakages following the tests.  A fuel leakage during or following a crash could create a fire hazard.  NHTSA shared these results with Toyota and Chrysler.  On August 1, 2002 Toyota issued a recall for 154,593 affected 2001-2002 Highlander vehicles to rotate the clamp that caused the leak.  Chrysler issued a recall on August 12, 2002 to install a seal on over 345,000 affected 2001-2002 PT Cruiser vehicles.

"I am very pleased that both Toyota and Chrysler have voluntarily agreed to recall all affected vehicles," said NHTSA Administrator Jeffrey W. Runge, M.D.  "Fuel leakage is a safety concern that could have serious consequences."

The New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) reports crash test results in a range of one to five stars, with five stars showing the best safety protection for vehicles.  Frontal tests should be compared only within the same weight class.

Rated for side impact are the 2002 Honda Civic two-door hatchback, MINI Cooper two-door coupe, Chrysler 300M four-door sedan, Kia Spectra four-door sedan, Subaru Impreza four-door wagon, Subaru Outback four-door wagon, Toyota Prius four-door sedan, Chevrolet Tracker 4x4 four-door utility, Hyundai Santa Fe 4x4 four-door utility, Suzuki Vitara 4x4 four-door utility, Toyota Highlander 4x4 four-door utility, and the Toyota Tundra 4x2 extended cab pickup.

The 2003 Cadillac CTS four-door sedan, Pontiac Vibe four-door wagon, Toyota Camry four-door sedan, Toyota Matrix four-door wagon, and the Honda Pilot 4x4 four-door utility are also rated.

The NCAP side impact ratings result in one to five stars based upon the chest measurement, with five stars being the highest rating.  Scores can be compared across the vehicle weight classes.

A fact sheet, containing explanatory information and tables showing NCAP crash tests results for model year 2002 and recently released 2003 vehicles, are available by calling the NHTSA Office of Public and Consumer Affairs, 202-366-9550; the Auto Safety Hotline, 1-888-327-4236; or by writing to NHTSA Public Affairs, Room 5232, 400 Seventh St., S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590.  Crash test information is available at NHTSA's web site by clicking on "Crash Tests" under "Popular Information" in the index on the left side of the screen.
