Arrest and Extra Expenses Are Possible Consequences of Ignoring Traffic Tickets

Submitted by: Tony Lu

Consequences of ignoring traffic tickets can include driver's license suspension, arrest and hefty financial burdens. If stopped for another violation while others are delinquent, being handcuffed and taken to jail is a very real possibility. Getting insurance, registering a new vehicle, or renewing an expiring license are all impossible. These issues lead to problems in other areas of daily life such as banking and airline travel. The problems associated with being a scofflaw aren't worth it.

Technology today allows police to find illegal drivers with more efficiency than ever before. Police cars are equipped with computers and many have mobile scanning devices. By scanning license plates police can spot cars owned by people with suspended licenses. The technology allows officers to have more up to date information than ever before on drivers. The chances of being apprehended driving surreptitiously are greater now than in the past.

Once stopped by an officer, the unauthorized driver is likely to be arrested and handcuffed. A trip to jail will likely follow. At this point some form of bail or bond must be posted before release may be arranged. The funds are to guarantee an appearance at a future court date. If this bail can't be arranged, an over night jail stay and a morning court hearing might be necessary.

Any magistrate is not going to look kindly on someone who has already ignored a legal summons. Most judges look at this as a sign of disrespect for the court and legal system. This can lead to more severe punishment. No excuse short of being near death is worth trying as it may only anger the judge further. The fine is likely to be greatly higher than the original ticket. A further suspension is also likely.

A suspension of thirty days to a year may be imposed depending on the severity of the violations. Past offenders with previous difficulties can expect suspensions on the long end of the range. If alcohol is involved the time can be even longer. Judges tend to be harsh with those who ignore orders.

Large fines are also likely to be tacked on. A ticket in the hundred dollar range might be tripled or even worse. Angry magistrates have significant leeway in the fines they may impose.

legal representation may be necessary adding more costs. An attorney may be necessary to cut through the legal red tape and negotiate with the judge or prosecutor. Attorneys are expensive and the bill can add several hundred dollars or more to what might have been a minor expense.

There are many consequences of ignoring traffic tickets. Arrest, humiliation, financial strain and lost work time are among them. Just paying a late ticket without any sort of arrest or detention is likely to me considerably more expensive due to late fees and extra court costs. Getting a suspension lifted from a license also takes money and time. These things can lead to missed work. An arrest may even result in the loss of a job. None of these headaches are worth the risk.
