Denny Hamlin beat at Pocono Raceway

July 27, 2006

So what is new at Pocono Raceway? New driver Hamlin is the new contender to beat and he proved it yesterday by winning the pole at the track in Long Pond, Pa., scoring his first career victory. Unfortunately, no one expected the chaos which would unfold behind this event.

Driver Hamlin, who won last month, was late to make his qualifying lap in the session with Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne sitting on top of the chart. But he posted a lap of 169.827 mph to grab the pole for Pennsylvania 500.

Hamlin mastered this track in June, partly because he had studied Pocono's characteristics over hours and hours of racing it on a video game. Hamlin then won the pole, overcame nearly crashing his Chevrolet after a blown tire made him spin through the grass, then a late red flag determined the win.

Hamlin became the sixth driver to sweep up the season at Pocono, he was able to do it from the pole both times, many stated that it was quite outstanding for a youngster who had never seen the track before he showed up last month and used the tactic of video games to learn his way around it.
