33 Killed In Nigerian Bus Crash

VOA News
September 8, 2007

Authorities say a fiery, head-on collision of two buses has killed 33 people in northwestern Nigeria.

Witnesses reported one of the buses tried to avoid an animal on the road and drove into the path of the second bus. The collision caused one of the buses to burst into flames.

The crash happened Friday on a busy road between the cities of Gusau and Sokoto in northwestern Nigeria.

Road accidents frequently claim large numbers of lives in Nigeria, where a crumbling road network and poorly maintained vehicles are common.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
