Indian officials say at least 15 people were killed and many more injured in a bus accident in the northern state of Uttarakhand.

Local authorities say the accident happened Sunday near the state capital, Dehradun. They say the bus fell into the Tons river after the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn.

At least eight passengers are missing. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Deadly road accidents are common in India. Officials blame most accidents on reckless driving, old vehicles and poorly maintained roads.
