YOUNG KARTING ACE JOINS SBR

Stone Brothers Racing
September 24, 2009

Karting whiz kid, Scott McLaughlin will commence a four year apprenticeship with Stone Brothers Racing next year, the position within the V8 Supercar team enabling the New Zealand born teenager to advance his mechanical skills and pursue his dream of a professional career in motor racing.

Just yesterday (Sunday) McLaughlin wrapped up the Victorian Country Series in Clubman Light at Warrnambool Raceway in Western Victoria, charging around the 700-metre circuit to record a clean sweep of victories and fastest laps to close out the six-round series in fine style. The kiwi karting ace also recorded the fastest lap in each race and claimed his first major series win since moving into the senior ranks at the start of this year.

The busy teenager who balances regular karting events, high school and rugby completed work experience with SBR earlier in the year and team owners Ross and Jimmy Stone were extremely impressed with Scott’s work ethic and professional approach to motor racing.

“Scott showed a lot of initiative when he approached us about working at SBR so we invited him to do a week of work experience. He is a very modest and enthusiastic young man, he fitted in really well so Jimmy and I were more than happy to offer him an apprenticeship,” Ross said

“Scott is in good company, we currently have two apprentices working at SBR, one in mechanics and one in fabrication. It’s a four year investment but we see it as a great way to kick start your career.

“As a young driver who clearly wants to pursue racing opportunities an apprenticeship is a great way for Scott to learn the inner workings of a car and team.”

Scott will complete this year at his Gold Coast high school, Saint Stephen’s College before kicking off his full time position with SBR mid January 2010.

“This is a great opportunity for me to align a technical qualification to my future motor racing pursuits and I can’t wait to get started. We met with my school and they fully supported me choosing this option and I can’t wait to start with SBR,” Scott said

“SBR can teach me so much that will help my motor racing plans and if I can’t succeed in carving out a driving career in V8 Supercars I will be more than happy working within in the industry with one of the top teams.”
